I am thinking!Okay, I just got back from the photoclub (and had some dinner) so here goes.
It seems that this photoclub strongly focusses on the story within/behind the photo.
Now I am not afraid of this, But it did make me think about my work.
I didnt even had time to sit down and the conversation allready started about the story within/behind a photo.
But when is a photo just a photo, and when does it contain a story.
And should an artistic photo have a story to begin with?
Lets say for instance we have this photo:
I just want to focus on the cube part. (so: no title, no artist comments)
If I where to create this photo, I'd get some place to put down a cube.
Add some lighting to it to spice it up if needed, maybe try to make it feel dynamic.. who cares.
I get the shot, it looks great (for this instance).
there is no story behind the photo, there is no story within the photo.. but just the way it looks, the contrast, the shadows every element adds to make the viewer say "ahhh" or "wow".
Shouldnt that be enough for a great photo? or is it just a photo since there is no story being told.
Obviously I have seen my share of photojournalist's work...
People at war, starving people, massacres, the life story of a junky and much more.
And even without a story (title/artists comments) the photo oozes with "Story".
Call it empathy, call it shock, call it "Emotional trigger" it does something to you.
Now this might not be the best example since something that might end up fairly abstract cannot be compared with something as emotionally heavy as some of the better photosjournalism.
But I am trying to make a questionable point here.
When does a photo tell a story, and when is it just a very nice photo.
example:
Now, I created that shot..
how? well.. I saw a fly, I got my macro lens on my camera so I made this shot.
Yes, I shot in b/w but I added massive contrast.
To me it doesnt tell a story.. does it tell a story?
When editing I noticed that the fly was tilting his head a little bit and to me that added to the overal photo.
A tilted head might obviously be recognised as curiosity or amazement. (in this case at least).
But does it tell a story? (not to me at that time)
Does this mean that this is just a photo and nothing more.
If a photo needs a story to be of artistic value.. I should almost delete all of my work.
(wont do that, dont worry).
Last example.
I really love this shot, probably since it was one of the first shots that made me think beyond normal vacation-like photography.
Does it tell a story, hell no.
But is this just a macrophoto of a zoomed in caterpiller.
Some might say yes, some might say that this goes beyond the regular "Lets take a photo of a caterpiler" photo's.
Why should a photo without a story be any less than a photo with a story?
when does a photo become artistic? good question.... the following would be the very definition of artistic, it may or may not help.
1. conforming to the standards of art; satisfying aesthetic requirements: artistic productions.
2. showing skill or excellence in execution: artistic workmanship.
3. exhibiting taste, discriminating judgment, or sensitivity: an artistic arrangement of flowers; artistic handling of a delicate diplomatic situation.
4. exhibiting an involvement in or appreciation of art, esp. the fine arts: He had wide-ranging artistic interests.
5. involving only aesthetic considerations, usually taken as excluding moral, practical, religious, political, or similar concerns: artistic principles.
6. of art or artists: artistic works.
7. of, like, or thought of as characteristic of an artist: an artistic temperament.
Okay, enough mindramblings,
Upcoming monday I am invited to take a looksy on how the photoclub-members give critique on photo's and to meet the other (50) members.
After that we (the club and I) have to decide if I am a valueble member to the club.
It was weird to actually have face to face conversations about photography..
It has been a while.. almost two years.
I might have grown with my photography on certain parts..
others have rusted and need a good brush-up.
As a final note, thank you for supporting me

Summer has ended The first signs of fall arrived at my door yesterday,
The tree in my front lawn is turning yellow and brown and the pathway is covered with its leafs.. Summer has ended.
Spiders walking and climbing around, flowers start to wither away and all the vibrant colors in my backyard are slowely fading away... Summer has ended.
